ON YOUR NEW ROOF PROJECT

A Roofing Primer: Why Today's Roofs are Prone to Failure

DON'T GET CAUGHT SHORT ON YOUR NEW ROOF

It seems to make sense to invite a number of roofers to bid on your roofing project. It would seem that hiring a lower bidder also makes sense. But consider this: Over a 10 year period, Naugle Co. has repaired 142 relatively new roofs for failures, leaks and collateral damage due to the poor craftsmanship of the "low bidder". The cost of the repairs and collateral damage averaged $931.69, almost 1/3 the cost of the original roofing project. We'll make sure you keep that $931.69 by quoting you a price that guarantees a roof that will last.

ROOFING CRAFTSMANSHIP HAS DETERIORATED OVER RECENT DECADES

The roofing trade is perceived by consumers as being easy, requiring little skill by the contractor and tradesman. It is easy to get into and get out of, according to industry surveys. A Columbia yellow pages survey shows that there were 31 total listings in 1992 for roofing contractors, only 16 of these were listed in 1988, only 9 from 1982. Just as astonishing, is that 17 additional (listed in 89-91, but not listed in 88 or 92) have come and gone. These statistics are still representative of the industry today.

THE HUMAN FACTORS IN ROOFING FAILURES AND LEAKS

Most contractors price roofing jobs and worker output by the "square", disregarding the actual tasks involved. In fact, most employees are paid by the "square". This results in reluctance of both the contractor and the employee to take the necessary time to properly perform the task at hand.

A QUOTE FROM PROFESSIONAL ROOFING MAGAZINE

"In every roofing competition that I have ever seen in the United States, the main criteria that is typically judged is speed. This unfortunately betrays our "Yankee" obsession with quick, short-term profits from fast roofing. We must get a handle on our cheap attitude toward roofing."

ROOFING IS MUCH MORE THAN NAILING ON SHINGLES

Most roof failures are caused by poor treatment of details such as: ventilation, edging, flashings, underlayment, vents, shingle condition, deck surfaces, fastenings, configuration, valleys.

THESE CONDITIONS OF THE INDUSTRY HAVE RESULTED IN:

  • short life span of quality materials
  • excessive roofing leaks
  • gauging skill by speed
  • low compensation that discourages quality
  • few contractors and tradesmen that stay in the industry long enough to become skilled and knowledgeable in the REQUIREMENTS for roofing application techniques.

EXPERIENCE

Our "Experience Engineered Total Craftsmanship Roofing System" is the cumulative result of acquired industry skills and knowledge gained in the repair of over 500 roofing failures and leaks. Guaranteeing to build problems "OUT", rather than building them "IN".

ENGINEERING

The "Experience Engineered Total Craftsmanship Roofing System" was compiled by Gary Naugle Sr., using over 50 years of general contracting experience in building over 500 new homes and thousands of remodeling, and roofing projects.

REGRETS

Regretfully, we like all other reputable general contractors, are no longer able to field our own roofing crews. We do however, select the most competent of subs and have a member of the team on site during application to make sure that all the trade skills involved are skillfully performed and that you get an Experience Engineered Total Craftsmanship Roofing System.
