The builders of the Leaning Tower really installed the footings with care and craftsmenship. However, they soon discoverd that there is more to a durable foundation than proper installation of the footings.

Why Foundations are Prone to Fail and Leak

The primary cause of foundation failures and waterproofing problems in mid-Missouri are expansive clay soils. These clay soils can expand and contract up to 300% and will migrate from place to place. This expanding, contracting and migrating is caused by high and/or low moisture content in the soil. When the soil expands and contracts it causes cracks and movement in concrete and walls and floors. Excessive water in the soil will cause hydrostatic pressure on floors and walls causing cracking and water leakage into interior areas.

Conditions and Factors of the Foundation Repair and Waterproofing Industry

Repairs are expensive and homeowners don't want to ever have to pay for them again. More skill and integrity are required for these repairs than any other area of your home. It is hard work that most people do not like to perform day in and day out. It is an easy business to get into, and out of. A Columbia yellow page survey show that there were 23 total listings in 1992 for foundation and waterproofing contractors, only 15 of these were listed in 1988. Just as astonishing is there were 15 additional listings have come and gone between 1988 and 1992. These statistics are still representative of the industry today.

These conditions and factors in the industry have resulted in:

Low compensation for workers that discourages knowledge and skilled workmen.
