How Long a Bathroom Remodel Takes in Columbia, MO

The Sequence, Week by Week

• Before work starts: design, selections and ordering. This is the stretch homeowners underestimate, and the one they control.
• Week one, first days: demolition and haul away, then any framing changes to the layout.
• Week one, remainder: plumbing and electrical rough-in, then the rough-in inspection.
• Week two, first days: backer board, waterproofing and floor preparation.
• Week two, remainder: tile setting, then grout, which needs time to cure before the room is used.
• Week three: vanity, toilet, shower glass, trim, paint, final inspection and walkthrough.

Two of those steps set the pace and cannot be compressed. Grout and thinset cure on their own schedule, and an inspection happens when it is scheduled rather than when the crew is ready.

What Actually Causes Delay

In our experience a schedule slips for a short list of reasons, and most of them are settled before the first day.

Special order tile and vanities top that list. A stock vanity is on a shelf; a custom one can be six to eight weeks out, and if it is ordered after demolition starts, the room simply waits. Changing a selection mid project restarts that clock.

Next is whatever is behind the wall. Plenty of houses here are old enough to still be running their original supply lines and wiring. Turning up a corroded pipe or an unsafe splice adds days, and it is work worth doing while the wall is open rather than deferring.

Third is decision lag. A project pauses at every point where a choice has not been made yet. Settling every selection up front is the single largest thing a homeowner can do to keep a remodel on schedule.

Living in the House During the Work

A one bathroom home is a different project from a two bathroom one, and it is worth saying so before the schedule is set.

If it is the only full bathroom, we sequence the work so the room is out of service for the shortest stretch possible, and confirm what is usable at the end of each day. Knowing that in advance is more useful than a slightly shorter total.
